How to optimize your iOS app keywords

  1. Enter your app name, subtitle and developer name for the same localization as your keywords, and pick your category.
  2. Paste your candidate keywords, most important first. Commas, spaces, or line breaks all work.
  3. Review the words removed and any that didn’t fit, then copy the result into App Store Connect.

The optimizer lowercases text, splits phrases into individual words, removes punctuation, and keeps the first occurrence of each word. It matches whole words, so “run” won’t remove “running.” Following Apple’s guidance, it also treats simple plurals (‑s, ‑es, ‑ies) as duplicates, drops broad terms like “app” and “game,” and drops words under three characters, which App Store Connect doesn’t accept. Those three rules are guesses: press Keep next to a word to put it back. Plural detection is built on English; check it in other languages.

Words enter the field in your order. When one doesn’t fit, the optimizer tries the next shorter ones and lists what was left out; it never cuts a word in half. Apple allows spaces within phrases; using single words here saves characters. The tool does not measure search volume, difficulty, or ranking potential.

How to research App Store keywords before filling the field

Start with what your app helps someone do. For a habit tracker, list the tasks, benefits, and use cases your users describe. Keep only terms that match features you actually offer.

Choose a target country and language, then use the ASO keyword research tool to compare demand signals, difficulty, and apps already ranking. Prioritize relevance first, then a realistic chance to compete. A broad, popular term can be harder to rank for than a specific one.

Put the clearest terms in your app name and subtitle, then use this field for additional words. Research each localization separately and track rankings after an update. The beginner’s ASO guide covers the wider workflow.

App Store keyword field example

For an app named Habit Tracker with the subtitle Build daily routines, a draft such as habit, daily, goals, goals, goal, streaks, reminders, app becomes goals, streaks, reminders: “habit” and “daily” are already indexed, “goal” repeats “goals,” and “app” is too broad. That leaves room for additional relevant keywords in App Store metadata.

App Store keywords FAQ

How do I choose App Store keywords?

Start with relevance: describe the features and problems your app actually solves. Research the language your audience uses in each market, then compare demand and ranking difficulty. A popular term is only useful if your app fits the intent and has a realistic chance of ranking.

How many characters is the App Store keyword field?

Apple’s search guidance sets a 100-character total, including commas and spaces. Its App Store Connect reference also specifies 100 bytes. They are equivalent for ASCII text; accented letters and other scripts can use more bytes. This optimizer fits your list in 100 characters and warns when it passes 100 bytes, so you can check localized lists in Connect.

Should I put spaces after commas in the keyword field?

No. Apple recommends separating terms with commas without spaces. Spaces inside a keyword phrase are allowed. This tool uses individual words separated by commas to save space.

Should I repeat words from my app name or subtitle?

No. Apple indexes your app name, subtitle and developer name, and advises against repeating those words, your category, or plurals of words you already use (“climb” and “climbs” count as duplicates). Enter them above to remove matches and make room for additional terms.

Can I use competitor names as keywords?

No. Apple prohibits competing app names and unauthorized use of trademarks in the keyword field. Use relevant, descriptive terms for your own app. This optimizer does not detect trademarks or certify compliance.

What are the most searched keywords on the App Store?

Demand varies by country, language, category, and season. Start with terms relevant to your app and compare current search signals in a keyword research tool. Top charts show app rankings, not keyword search volumes; they are useful for finding apps to study.
